How to Secure a Wireless Network

Almost all of us have jumped on someone else's unsecured Wi-Fi networks. Is there any harm if you are just honest soul searching for an Internet connection.

But if you're an insecure network owner, you should be aware, there is no completely honest souls--not so hard without honest men and see what you do on your network. Sounds scary right? Here is how to fix the problem.

What are WEP and WPA encryption, and which should I use?

The first line of Defense for your wireless network is encrypted, transmitted between your PC and your wireless router by encoding the data. It is unfortunate, most routers come with encryption turned off, and a lot of users do not open it yourself completely exposed. If you haven't already, please enable your router encryption, and using the most powerful form, supported by your network. Wireless protected access (WPA) protocols, and more recently the WPA2 has replaced the old and not-so-secure wireless encryption protocol (WEP).

Going with WPA or WPA2 if possible, because WEP is relatively easy to crack. (All of the devices on your network you must use the same form on; you are not using a mixture of WEP and WPA. Using WPA and WPA2 keys change dynamically, making it almost impossible to break. For your encryption keys, such as 14 characters or more combinations of numbers and letters that the use of strong passwords.

If your old routers only support WEP, you will be safe if you use 128 bit WEP keys – but check the manufacturer's Web site will also add support for WPA firmware update. If the update is possible, consider using the newer models, you can replace the old adapter and router supports WPA. Find routers support mixed mode WPA+WPA2, allowing you to use more powerful WPA2 encryption with adaptors to support it, while still maintaining compatibility with WPA adaptors.

Please make sure that you change a setting in your router's default network name and password. This could allow hackers to break into your router and aped the set it is much more difficult.
